Kate Watkins Artwork on View

For the months of April and May we have the pleasure of exhibiting artwork by Artist and Printmaker, Kate Watkins.

Kate fell in love with printmaking over 20 years ago while attempting to find balance with her day job at the time as a photography teacher. Kate wanted to find a way to maintain her own creative practice outside work. Since then Kate has explored many different printing techniques including lino, collagraph, etching and monoprint. Kate’s current focus is largely based around screenprint and monoprint.

The Artwork is available to view daily, free entry with no booking required. Visit the first floor of the pavilion to discover our art programme Rotate.

About Kate Watkins

Kate studied Fine Art at Leeds University and has an MA in Fine Art Printmaking from Winchester School of Art. Regularly exhibiting in local and national exhibitions, a career highlight being having an etching exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition some years ago.

Kate began creating geometric abstract prints about six years ago in response to her Dad's dementia diagnosis. The imagined shelter spaces were intended as a celebration of the uplifting and restorative power of colour. Building up compositions with layer upon layer of translucent ink at the etching press results in prints that are both seemingly simple yet convey complex colour relationships and subtle surface texture.

Alongside geometric designs Kate has created an ongoing series of circular abstract screenprints which come together over multiple sessions in the print studio by overlapping layers of acrylic paint from screens exposed with expressive handmade marks drawn onto drafting film.

Kate now work as a technical instructor in printmaking part time. Alongside this Kate maintains her creative practice and runs Love to Print, an arts kit small business, set up to share Kate’s love of print and teaching knowledge.
